Samsung Omnia M with specs like the Omnia 7 landing this week

The Samsung Omnia M, powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone, is coming to the UK on Wednesday. The question is, should you get it?

The Omnia M sports the same specs just like a previous Windows Phone handset by Samsung. If you were thinking the Omnia W, think again. The upcoming handset sports the same specs of a Samsung Windows Phone released in 2010, the Omnia 7. It sports a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel camera, and a 1 GHz processor.

The Omnia M runs the latest version of Windows Phone, version 7.5. However, since Microsoft announced that current Windows Phone devices will not be updated to Windows Phone 8, this might not be a smart purchase.

Will you be getting your hands on the Samsung Omnia M, or are you saving your money for Windows Phone 8 handsets? Give us your thoughts.

Windows Phone Marketplace closing its doors to devices not running Mango

If you own a device running Windows Phone below version 7.5 (Mango), we have bad news for you. Microsoft announced that it would no longer be making its Windows Phone Marketplace available for devices running versions of its mobile operating system below Mango.

On the Windows Team Blog, Microsoft announced that it would be making two changes to the Windows Marketplace. The first was no longer giving access to apps via its desktop Zune software with the exception of the Zune HD MP3 player. The second involves the Mango version of Windows Phone, which run devices such as the Lumia 800 and the Lumia 900. Microsoft announced the devices that did not run at least Mango would no longer be able to download apps. These devices would only be allowed to browse the internet.

The news may sound bad, but the reality is most Windows Phones in the market run or can be update to Mango. To check, all you have to do is go to settings and then phone update. If an update is available, connect your phone to your computer via Zune then follow the instructions given.

Microsoft has a reason for announcing these changes. According to the software giant, Windows Phone Mango “is part of a larger effort aimed at improving Marketplace performance and security, and paving the way for even faster growth and more new features”.

This push to get every device running Mango could mean that Windows Phone 8 will be rolling out to all devices. Although this information should be taken with a pinch of salt, it is a possibility.

Windows Phone Tango launching on the 21st of March in China

The most current Windows Phone-powered handsets run Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango). These include the Nokia Lumia 800 and the HTC Titan. Soon Microsoft will be launching the latest version of their mobile operating system. The Redmond firm hints that it will be launching Windows Phone Tango on the 21st of March in China, according to the press invites is has sent out. The invite says that “the carefully designed, refined, and all-new Windows Phone 7.5” will be unveiled at the event in China. This suggests that official unveiling of Tango.

This comes after Nokia announced that it is planning to launch its Lumia handsets to China. HTC also rebranded its Titan to the Triumph for the said market.

Although Tango is expected to roll out in April, it is said to be only a minor upgrade. It is said to power budget and mid-range Windows Phones. The major update will come from Windows Phone 8 (also known as Apollo), which is expected to roll out late during the year.

Microsoft has begun to penetrate the European and US markets with its latest Windows Phones, spearheaded by Nokia and its Lumia handsets. The software giant hopes to do the same in the Chinese market.

Do you think Microsoft’s Windows Phone has a chance of better competing with the likes of Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS? Give us your thoughts.
