Luxury phone manufacturer, Vertu, is no longer owned by Nokia as of last year. It has now launched its first device powered by Android, the Vertu Ti, which will set you back a whopping £6,700. In an interview with CNET UK, Perry Oosting, Vertu CEO, said that they had Android in mind for a long time.
Vertu has made extremely expensive but utterly useless handsets, since they ran Symbian. Oosting was asked if his company wanted to use Android even during the times when they were bound by Nokia. He answered, “Absolutely.”
Once Vertu was no longer owned by Nokia, the boss spoke of the “freedom” brought by the split, saying “it’s giving you, really, to make the right choice. And we believe with Android that it’s the right choice.”
Speaking about Microsoft’s Windows Phone, he said, “You need to be first of all — as you know — part of an ecosystem.
“If you go down to ecosystems you probably have only two choices. Besides, iOS is a closed one, so that’s not a choice, and then you have Windows Phone, which is certainly a beautiful user interface but it’s still in the beginning stage.”
Android dominating the market is the main reason Vertu chose Android. However, Oosting does say that “the customisation that we were able to do on Android” is another.
The Vertu Ti runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which is disappointing considering handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Google Nexus 4 run Android 4.1 and Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) respectively. However, it is a far cry from what was running on their handsets in the past years. Additionally, the titanium casing adorned with rubies and crystals is definitely an eye-catcher.

Nokia has just unveiled the Nokia 808 PureView. The phone sports a whopping 41 megapixel camera, when high end smartphones offered by the competition offer 8 to 12 megapixel cameras. The Samsung Galaxy S2 and iPhone 4S both sport 8 megapixel cameras. The Sony XPERIA S sports a 12 megapixel camera. 41 megapixels is definitely leaps beyond what the current flagships have to offer.
If you thought that this would be one-time affair just like the Nokia N8 and its 12 megapixel camera, think again. At Mobile World Congress, the Finnish phone manufacturer announced that it would be introducing the same camera technology into its future lineup.
This new 41 megapixel camera allows users shoot using various resolutions. Users can opt to snap pictures using the standard 5 to 8 megapixels, which can be then blown up to an extremely larger size. The most resolution one can use is 38 megapixels, which allows you to enjoy rich details not offered by standard camera sensors.
To compliment this massive sensor, the 808 PureView will need high-quality lens to do the job right. Nokia has done exactly this with Carl Zeiss optics.
Unfortunately, the 808 PureView is powered by Symbian Belle. Although this might be disappointing, Nokia did say that it would be launching future phones sporting the same technology. So don’t be surprised if we see a Windows Phone sporting a massive sensor soon.
Other specs include 512 MB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, and microSD support, which is essential if you’re planning to store 38 megapixel shots in the phone. The phone’s camera can record videos at 1080p. Nokia Rich Recording allows CD-like audio quality that does not require the need to make use of external microphones. The phone also offers Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 surround sound.
The Nokia 808 PureView will be hitting shops in May and will set you back €450 (approximately £380).
Interested in getting your hands on a Nokia 808 PureView, or would you still rather carry around a separate digital camera? Give us your thoughts.
