LG announces 2D to 3D conversion kit for Optimus 3D
The Korean phone manufacturer LG is determined to make stereoscopic technology the next big thing. It has announced a 2D to 3D conversion kit for its Android-powered LG Optimus 3D. The kit is an OpenGL-based conversion engine for games, which allows game developers to convert popular 2D titles into affordable 3D masterpieces.
How does it work on the consumer’s end? With the kit, the smartphone’s users can choose to give their regular games a 3D effect. The phone scans the game and sees if it is in the list of 3D-optimized games. If ever the game is not on the list, the kit will enhance the game’s graphics.
With the 2D to 3D conversion kit, smaller game developers can give their games a 3D effect, which will further enhance the gaming experience on the Android platform. This means cheaper games now offer an extra kick, which you are sure to enjoy.
According to LG, almost 50 3D-enhanced games will be ready before the end of October. An additional 50 games will be available early in 2012.
The kit by LG will be rolling out on October, which is the same time LG will be rolling out its first main update for the stereoscopic smartphone. However, LG failed to disclose when exactly on October the kit is to arrive.
Aside from games, LG and National Geographic Assignment have closed a deal that will be adding 3D videos and photography to the phone’s list of 3D content. A total of 6 videographers and photographers will be using the LG Optimus 3D to deliver footage to the phone’s users. However, again, LG failed to disclose when they plan to put this into action.
LG’s 2D to 3D conversion kit will be featured this September on the IFA trade show in Berlin, Germany.
