An Apple patent will allow future versions of the iPhone to adjust the phone’s speaker volume, based on its proximity to user’s ears.
Apple Insider reports, “Apple’s U.S. Patent No. 8,452,020 for “Adjustment of acoustic properties based on proximity detection” describes a method in which data from the iPhone’s proximity sensor is employed to calculate distance from a user, which is then applied to dynamically adjust volume.”
It adds, “As noted in the patent language, the invention can dynamically adjust volume based on distance away from the user. This action can apply to both the iPhone’s receiver as well as the speaker, depending on which sound output mode is selected.
“In another embodiment, the phone will fade from the receiver to the speaker if a predefined distance between device and user is reached. For example, if a user starts a conversation holding the iPhone to their ear, and puts the device down on a desk or chair, the proximity sensor will note the change and switch to “speaker mode”.
However, the sites notes, “It is unclear if Apple will implement the feature in an upcoming iPhone, but the hardware needed to deploy the tech is either readily available or already found in existing models.”

Apple new patent allows the iPhone to determine if a call or text is best.
AppleInsider reports, “Apple’s U.S. Patent No. 8,433,805 for a “Method and system for facilitating contacting people using electronic devices,” describes a technique in which an inititing user can be automatically informed of the most appropriate way to contact another person. In the various embodiments that follow, a “contactee” can also manually select which method of communication is best for a given time, for example via email when in a business meeting.
“The patent aims to solve the problem of missed connections due to circumstances where another mode of communication would have been preferable. As an example, a “contactor” wants to communicate with another user, but the contactee may not answer a phone call because they are driving. In this situation, a text message or email would have been preferable. Apple’s patent looks to automatically, and dynamically, notify a contactor of which communications method is most appropriate.”
So does this mean your wife can’t call you when you’re busy? The site explains, “Priorities can also be assigned. Groups can be placed in a number of tiers, each of which carries special contact rules. A user’s boss and spouse may be in Tier 1, while friends are in Tier 2, and co-workers in Tier 3.”
Sadly, it wasn’t mentioned when this new feature will make to iPhones or if it will ever see the light of day.

A KDDI (Japanese network operator) “au” wireless service document has been leaked, which reveals the iPhone 5S will be available for pre-order in June. The leak comes from Nowhereelse.fr, a French site, via the AppleInsider.
AppleInsider reports, “Obtained by French website Nowhereelse.fr., the supposed document looks to be meant for sales floor staff and carries pricing information as well as a few details regarding the as-yet-unannounced iPhone 5S.”
The site points out, “While AppleInsider cannot vouch for the document’s authenticity, the laminated paper is very similar to the current product and pricing “cheat sheets” referred to by many cell phone dealers and official carrier stores in Japan. It should be noted, however, that the cards can easily be reproduced as some are printed directly at point of sale from a PDF file, with the only distinguishing feature being a company logo.”
Speaking about the handset’s specs leaked on the document, the site says, “Written and starred in red is information for the iPhone 5S “new product,” which is scheduled for a pre-sale announcement date of June 20 with sales starting in July. Below the release dates is a notation for major feature changes from the iPhone 5, which in this case says the supposed 5S will carry a fingerprint reader, 13-megapixel camera and iOS 7.”
The site notes, “While mere speculation, the information quoted in the purportedly leaked material does jibe with the timeline of Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference, which is scheduled to take place from June 10 through 14. If the iPhone 5S were to be announced at the conference, it would be one week prior to the June 20 pre-sale date referred to in the supposed KDDI document.”
However, it also says, “Though enticing, the rumor may not be accurate as Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at product “surprises” for the fall quarter during the company’s latest earnings call. Also, a recent research note from reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted upgrades to Apple’s MacBook lineup will be the highlight of the WWDC, with no indication given as to a new iPhone model launch.”
