The iPhone 5 is quickly becoming the hottest-selling smartphone in the market. However, owners of the new handset are quickly noticing that the new iPhone is far from perfect with a new issue that has surfaced.
Initially, new iPhone owners were annoyed with the bug-infested Apple Maps app, which replaced Google Maps. Secondly, the black version was found to be more susceptible to scratches and dents, which Apple coldly said that this was “normal”. Now, owners are reporting taking photos with an irritating purple haze.
Customer’s rants have surfaced on an AnandTech forum. New iPhone owners are reporting to see a purple haze when they snap photos with the handset in bright light. One forum member reportedly got in contact with Apple support and was informed that the issue is widespread.
It’s a known fact that all camera lenses struggle when exposed to bright light. However, it seems that the iPhone 5 struggles even more when exposed to extremely bright light. If the reports are true, it is believed that the new iPhone’s sapphire crystal lens could be causing the problem.

We’re not exactly sure how widespread the problem is. We’re not even sure if UK iPhone 5 users are experiencing the problem. However, there isn’t a lot of bright sunlight here, so we can’t really test it ourselves.
The iPhone 5 sports a camera similar to the iPhone 4S. However, it does take pictures in more vibrant colours, despite the newly discovered problem.

On Monday, Foxconn riots stopped production, but experts warn that the riots may return.
Foxconn is the biggest electronics manufacturer in the world. It is where Apple’s devices such as the new iPad and the iPhone 5 are built. Sadly, Foxconn factories are also known for their poor working conditions and long working hours that have pushed many of its workers to suicide.
Earlier during the week, around 2,000 Foxconn employees rioted, which injured 40 people. The riot temporarily stopped production in one factory in Taiyuan, which was caused by clashes between workers and guards. It is also believed that the high demand for the iPhone 5 has put everyone on edge. Experts warn, via the Washington post, that the issues behind the riot must be resolved. Otherwise, more riots will follow.
Speaking to the Post, a Shenzhen labor expert, Liu Kaiming, said, “Such riots have become in some ways inevitable. It’s no longer simply a matter raising the wages.”
The US Fair Labor Association (FLA) found that Foxconn employees were working extremely long hours without overtime (11 days straight with no day off at 70 hours a week), saying that “serious and pressing concerns” plagued factory workers.
Furthermore, the preciseness and repetitiveness of the job is causing a stressful environment for employees.
Lastly, factory workers complained to the post of abusive guards and poor management. A former worker said one problem was “spiritual emptiness”. Workers were not allowed to talk to each other.
When reports of worker abuse surfaced, Apple quickly took action. Talking after FLA conducted its inspection, Tim Cook, Apple CEO, said, “Our team has been working for years to educate workers, improve conditions, and make Apple’s supply chain a model for the industry.”
For the first time, Apple pressured Foxconn to raise wages and change working conditions for its factory workers. Sadly, this has done little to alleviate the pressure.
The pressure is expected to reach its boiling point once more with the increase of the iPhone 5’s production during the holiday season.

According to display experts, the retina display on the Apple iPhone 5 beats the display on the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The tests were conducted by DisplayMate Technologies. The new iPhone was given an A in the tests, while the Galaxy S3 was given a respectable B+. Not enough, however, to beat the 4-inch retina display on Apple’s new kit.
DisplayMate says that the screen on the iPhone 5 “is a significant improvement over the display in the iPhone 4”. Compared to the previous iPhone, it offers significantly lower reflection, more image contrast, and enhanced readability in high lighting conditions.
DisplayMate adds that the new iPhone’s display is the best display on a smartphone the company has ever tested.
The Galaxy S3 did not do too well under bright sunlight, due to only half the brightness compared to the display on the new iPhone. One factor is the power restrictions required by OLED displays.
Despite losing to the iPhone 5, DisplayMate still gives the S3’s display a rating of “very good”. The only reason why the new iPhone’s retina display bested its OLED screen is because it is new tech that still needs to be perfected.
DisplayMate says that Samsung has “not bothered to calibrate the colour gamut on any of its OLED displays, so they are wildly inaccurate and produce inaccurate and over-saturated colors”. This means that Apple pays more attention to detail compared to the Korean tech giant.
The verdict: the Apple iPhone 5 is more ideal for viewing things on the display under direct sunlight. Just don’t run the Apple Maps app if you don’t want to ruin the experience.
