Next generation Siri may give users the luxury of voice command shopping

Currently, Siri on the iPhone 4S has created such a craze among Apple enthusiasts. It allows users to call and text at your command. It also allows users to get information on local businesses. Sadly, this function is still not available in the UK, since Apple is yet to hire a company providing local information. Despite this, the voice-activated personal assistant is so popular; hackers are finding ways to port the application to older iOS devices such as the iPhone 4.

It seems Apple has more plans for Siri, other than providing local information and assistance. According to the Apple Insider, the Cupertino firm has filed a patent that will allow Siri to shop for you using voice commands.

According to the report, Siri will initially allow users to shop for music, movies, eBooks, and other low-ticket items, if their understanding of the patent filing is correct. iTunes and iBooks were mentioned, which suggests that goods will come from these offerings. Surprisingly, Amazon is also mentioned. Does this mean goods can be purchased from Amazon, the makers of the iPad 2’s biggest rival the Kindle Fire?

Do you think the next generation Siri will allow you to shop using voice commands? Give us your thoughts through a comment.

The iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S2 dominate Christmas smartphone sales in the UK – Nokia Lumia 800 far behind

Wondering which handsets are dominating the smartphone market in the UK? According to GfK, two handsets have been landing more in the hands of Christmas shoppers. These are the Apple iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S2. Unfortunately, the Nokia Lumia 800 did not make it to the top 15 list, despite Nokia’s extensive marketing campaign.

Although the iPhone 4S is in pole position, no one can deny the success of the Galaxy S2. Since Apple’s latest smartphone was only launched in October, Apple’s cult following is expected to get their hands on the latest iPhone as soon as it comes out. The Galaxy S2, on the other hand, has been in the market since April of this year. Despite being in the market for eight months, it is still the second top selling smartphone for December and topped sales for eight months running. It did this without spending as much on Advertising and Marketing compared to Apple.

Although five generations of the iPhone made it to the top 15 list, it’s great to see the Samsung Galaxy S2 is still going strong, despite being in the market for eight months since April.

How about you? What are you getting a loved one for Christmas? Will it be an Apple iPhone 4S or a Samsung Galaxy S2?

Google to launch Siri rival Majel

Siri, the voice-controlled virtual assistant, quickly made waves in the mobile phone community when it was discovered on the iPhone 4S. Since Siri proved to be such a success, Android and Me reports that Google is said to be developing its own version of the application called Majel, the voice of the Starship Enterprise computer in Star Trek.

Although we can’t confirm if Majel is a codename, the application is believed to be officially announced within the first quarter of next year. According to speculations, it will be unveiled at MWC (Mobile World Congress), which will be held in February.

The Android Market has offered Siri alternatives for Android handsets in the past. One of the most popular apps is Iris. However, none have given Apple’s Siri a run for its money. If this rumor is to be believed, this is all about to change by 2012. We might just see voice-activated personal assistants on handsets such as the Motorola Razr, HTC Sensation XE, or the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Although Majel is set to rival Siri, Google is said to go with a different approach with Majel. The search giant is said to allow the application to control more functions such as app management and browsing.

Excited to get Majel on your Android device, or are you too busy with Siri on your iPhone 4S? Share your opinion through a comment.
