The Instagram app for Android can truly be called a success. In a week’s time, the app received more than 5 million downloads, which caught the attention of Facebook. Facebook purchased the app for $1 billion. The app’s popularity has definitely skyrocketed. Unfortunately, shady figures have taken advantage of this success and created a fake Instagram app, which contains malware that can span premium numbers via SMS without you knowing. This can potentially rack up your phone bill.
According to Sophos, a security provider, “In our tests, the app didn’t do a very good job of emulating the genuine Instagram app, but that may be because it failed to find the correct network operator. Because this is a malicious app that seems to be relying in the sending of background SMS messages to earn its creators revenue.”
The fake Instagram app for Android cannot be found in Google Play (formerly known as the Android Market). It can only be downloaded by users who allow downloads from ‘Unknown Sources’. Therefore, only download the genuine Instagram app for your Samsung Galaxy S2 or HTC One X from Google Play.

Ever since the Instagram app for Android was released a few days ago, Instagram has enjoyed a massive surge of new users. However, the app came with a glitch. Now, an update has rolled out to address these issues, which will give its Android users a better retro image filtering experience.
According to Engadget, the app has been updated to version 1.2.3, which will address problems with device support and a few more bugs. The update will now allow the app to support Wi-Fi smartphones and tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Motorola Xoom. The update allows users to install and save on SD cards, which is ideal for devices that come with small storage capacities. The update also fixes a bug, which mutes audio when capturing images.
Instagram was initially exclusively available to iOS-powered devices such as the iPhone 4S. Now, the app is available for Android devices. The Android version of the app came with a number of issues, but it looks like these problems have been resolved with the update.
You can either download the latest version of the app on Google Play (formerly known as the Android Market) or update the app on your Android device.
