Luxury phone manufacturer, Vertu, is no longer owned by Nokia as of last year. It has now launched its first device powered by Android, the Vertu Ti, which will set you back a whopping £6,700. In an interview with CNET UK, Perry Oosting, Vertu CEO, said that they had Android in mind for a long time.
Vertu has made extremely expensive but utterly useless handsets, since they ran Symbian. Oosting was asked if his company wanted to use Android even during the times when they were bound by Nokia. He answered, “Absolutely.”
Once Vertu was no longer owned by Nokia, the boss spoke of the “freedom” brought by the split, saying “it’s giving you, really, to make the right choice. And we believe with Android that it’s the right choice.”
Speaking about Microsoft’s Windows Phone, he said, “You need to be first of all — as you know — part of an ecosystem.
“If you go down to ecosystems you probably have only two choices. Besides, iOS is a closed one, so that’s not a choice, and then you have Windows Phone, which is certainly a beautiful user interface but it’s still in the beginning stage.”
Android dominating the market is the main reason Vertu chose Android. However, Oosting does say that “the customisation that we were able to do on Android” is another.
The Vertu Ti runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which is disappointing considering handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Google Nexus 4 run Android 4.1 and Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) respectively. However, it is a far cry from what was running on their handsets in the past years. Additionally, the titanium casing adorned with rubies and crystals is definitely an eye-catcher.

If you own a device running either Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, we have good news for you. Google recently released the official Google Calendar app, which has the ability to sync all of your calendars.
Google announced that its Calendar app is now available on Google Play via its official Android blog. Previously, the app was only available to devices running the vanilla version of Android such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
The app allows users to enjoy the usual features. It also comes with the ability to pinch to zoon on a certain day. You can also respond to a notification to update a particular event with customisable messages. You can respond by saying, “I’ll be late again”, or “I’ll be there in a sec”. From within notifications, you can also snooze an event.
If you’re constantly traveling, you’ll be happy to know that you can set up a home time zone, which helps you manage your time when travelling. A sync period allows you to review a year’s worth of events.
If you’re an avid Google fan, the native calendar app on Android handsets just won’t do. It’s likely that you’ll be more interested in the official Google Calendar app or other official Google apps such as Google+ or Gmail. If you own an HTC device, beware. If you’re with O2 waiting for the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update for your Sony XPERIA Arc, Ray, or Neo, we have bad news for you. The network isn’t happy with the update and has decided to abandon upgrading the said phones to ICS.
O2 explains, “Often the software passes our testing. Sometimes we spot a few small issues that our testing team quickly work to fix.
“Unfortunately with the Xperia Ray, Arc and Neo our testing found that the software update affected the phone’s speed and performance. These issues were present on three separate versions of the Android 4.0 software we tested and are caused by the software having more advanced hardware requirements than previous versions.”
Bummed your Sony XPERIA Arc, Ray, or Neo with O2 will not be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich? Express your thoughts through a comment.
