Experts say iPhone 5’s retina display beats Samsung Galaxy S3 OLED

According to display experts, the retina display on the Apple iPhone 5 beats the display on the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The tests were conducted by DisplayMate Technologies. The new iPhone was given an A in the tests, while the Galaxy S3 was given a respectable B+. Not enough, however, to beat the 4-inch retina display on Apple’s new kit.

DisplayMate says that the screen on the iPhone 5 “is a significant improvement over the display in the iPhone 4”. Compared to the previous iPhone, it offers significantly lower reflection, more image contrast, and enhanced readability in high lighting conditions.

DisplayMate adds that the new iPhone’s display is the best display on a smartphone the company has ever tested.

The Galaxy S3 did not do too well under bright sunlight, due to only half the brightness compared to the display on the new iPhone. One factor is the power restrictions required by OLED displays.

Despite losing to the iPhone 5, DisplayMate still gives the S3’s display a rating of “very good”. The only reason why the new iPhone’s retina display bested its OLED screen is because it is new tech that still needs to be perfected.

DisplayMate says that Samsung has “not bothered to calibrate the colour gamut on any of its OLED displays, so they are wildly inaccurate and produce inaccurate and over-saturated colors”. This means that Apple pays more attention to detail compared to the Korean tech giant.

The verdict: the Apple iPhone 5 is more ideal for viewing things on the display under direct sunlight. Just don’t run the Apple Maps app if you don’t want to ruin the experience.

Would you get your hands on an iPhone 5 because its more ideal for viewing stuff on its retina display under direct sunlight, or do you still think the bigger OLED on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is still better? Share your opinion through a comment on our Facebook page.

Now TV still not available for the Samsung Galaxy S3 or HTC One X – now available for the iPhone and iPad

Despite the Samsung Galaxy S3 appearing on the ad of Sky’s new Now TV on-demand streaming service, it is still not available for the highly popular Android smartphone. It is also not available for the HTC One X. The app, however, is now available for the iPhone and iPad.

Although the service is still unavailable for the S3, it is available for a number of Android devices. These include the HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD, HTC Desire S, HTC Incredible, HTC Sensation (available for devices running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich), the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy S2 (available for devices running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich), and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

A Now TV explained on its forum, “Although the Sky Go and Now TV apps have similarities, there (are) also a few significant differences which prevent the Now TV app functioning correctly on the Samsung Galaxy S3. Rest assured our developers are working diligently to get the app working as it should on more handsets including the Galaxy S3.”

Waiting for Now TV to be available for your Samsung Galaxy S3 or HTC One X? We’ll keep you posted once we know more.

Mysterious 4.8-inch Samsung panel leaked – could this be Samsung’s first Windows Phone 8 handset?

A photo of a mysterious 4.8-inch Samsung front panel has been sent to Know Your Mobile, which belongs to an unannounced handset. The front panel could belong to the US network Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S3, or it could be the front panel of Samsung’s new Windows Phone 8 device.

Judging from the picture, the display could be 4.8-inches. It could also house the S3’s 4.8-inch display, but the panel appears to be black. Samsung’s new flagship is available in pebble blue and white variants. So the colour black suggests that this is a different device. Furthermore, it sports a bigger bottom lip compared to the S3. So it could be a Windows Phone handset.

Do you think this is a black Samsung Galaxy S3 headed to Verizon US, or do you think this Samsung’s first Windows Phone 8 handset? Share your opinion through a comment.
