Google says goodbye to 10 of its services – looks forward to the future

The search giant Google bids farewell to 10 of its services and products, which according to them isn’t “improving the lives of billions of people”.

Among these products is Google Desktop, which searches your computer instead of the web. Although useful, the concept has been overused. Another product is Aardvark. This is a social search tool, which has “helped people answer each other’s questions”. By giving Aardvark the boot, it said goodbye to a $50 million investment it made back in 2010.

Don’t feel this was a waste though. Google did say it will “continue to work on tools that enable people to connect and discover richer knowledge about the world.”

Other the products mentioned above, the discontinued list include Google Maps API, Fast Flip, Google Pack, Image Labeler, Google Web Security, Notebook, Subscribed Links, and Sidewiki.

It’s not all lost though. Some of these services will be integrated into existing Google products. When it comes to the discontinued products’ employees, they will not be given the boot. They will be transferred to other services.

According to Google, giving these services the boot will allow them to “make things much simpler for our users”. It will also allow the search giant to “devote more resources to high impact products” as well as “focus on building world-changing products with a truly beautiful user experience”.

Are you disappointed Google gave these services the boot, or are you excited on Google’s future products? Let us know what you feel.
