Trial between Apple and Samsung set for next week in the UK

Since April of 2011, Apple (makers of the iPhone 4S) and Samsung (makers of the Galaxy S3) have been waging legal battles in various countries around the world. Now, the two are taking the fight to the UK on Monday.

On the Ministry of Justice’s website, a court date between Samsung Electronics (UK) vs Apple Inc. has been published. The proceedings will start on the 18^th of June (Monday) at 10.30am, which will be held in the Rolls building in the High Court of Justice. His Honour Judge Birss was assigned to the trial.

So what’s the issue here? Apple claims that Galaxy tablets infringe on the iPad’s design. Samsung, of course, seeks for the declaration of non-infringement.

It looks like we’ll have to endure another grueling legal debacle between Apple and Samsung.

Samsung to manufacture A6 chip for Apple iPhone 5

Apple and Samsung have been violently engaged in legal battles on various parts around the world. However, it looks like there is still hope for a peaceful reconciliation. The Korean Times reports that, despite their differences, the Korean tech giant and the Cupertino firm will still be working on the iPhone 5.

According to rumors, Apple has contracted another firm, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), to create the A6 chip. However, according to new reports, Samsung is still onboard. In fact, it has increased chip production in its Austin plant in Texas.

An anonymous Apple exec told The Korean Times, “Apple has been in talks with Samsung over shipment of its A6 quad-core mobile processor (AP) chips to be used in the next iPhone. It appears that Apple clearly has concluded that Samsung remains a critical business partner… Samsung Electronics will apply its advanced 28-nanometer processing technology to produce qualified A6 mobile APs,”

TSMC, however, will still produce a limited amount of customized chips for Apple. Apple still does not want to take the risk of giving the entire contracted to an untested manufacturer.

On Steve Job’s private memorial, Samsung’s CEO, Lee Jae-Yong, was invited. This does suggest that the relationship between the two was not as bad as we thought.

This still doesn’t mean that the two have ceased to legally outmaneuver each other on various parts of the world. Apple has managed to ban the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany and Australia. Samsung is attempting to do the same thing in Australia and other countries in Europe with the iPhone 4S.

This does, however, show that the two are willing to work together to get Steve Jobs’ legacy out in the market. After all, there is a lot of money to be made with the partnership.

Samsung seeking to get the iPhone 5 banned

Samsung is seeking to get the Apple iPhone 5 banned, when it launches in Samsung’s home turf, Korea. A Samsung executive is said to have stated this.

According to the Korea Times, the Korean tech giant will be filing for an injunction, which seeks the sales ban of the 5^th generation iPhone. Samsung will be seeking an injunction in order to protect the company’s wireless patents.

The anonymous Samsung exec said, “Just after the arrival of the iPhone 5 here, Samsung plans to take Apple to court here for its violation of Samsung’s wireless technology related patents.”

“For as long as Apple does not drop mobile telecommunications functions, it would be impossible for it to sell its i-branded products without using our patents.

“We will stick to a strong stance against Apple during the lingering legal fights.”

If Samsung hometown lawsuit pushes through, this will be the 24^th patent infringement case between both industry giants.

Currently, Apple has successfully gained temporary injunctions, which banned the sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in various countries around the world. Apple claims that certain Samsung tablets and smartphones copied the design of their iOS-powered iPad and iPhone.

If Samsung manages to get the iPhone 5 banned in Korea, this would somehow level the playing fields. This could give the Korean tech giant more grounds to seek similar injunctions across the globe.
