Analyst reckons Apple will make cheap iPhones in 2014

According to an analyst, Apple will be making cheap iPhones in 2014. The question is, will this happen?

The Business Insider reports that analyst Gene Munster reckons Apple will be making a cheap version of the highly popular iPhone sometime in the next two years. He believes that the bargain iPhone will only cost $200 (around £125). He says that the budget iPhone will be for emerging markets such as China and India.

Munster says that the business model for smartphones wherein networks subsidise handsets is not applicable in emerging markets. However, with a potential 3 billion customers in these countries, Apple is willing to make changes.

In China, two of the top network operators have announced that they will be offering the iPhone 5 in the near future. However, the biggest network in China, China Mobile, still refuses to offer the handset. This means that Apple will never be able to take advantage of the network’s 700 million subscribers.

It’s a fact that Android-powered handsets dominate the Chinese market. In China, it’s not only the budget Android phones that sell like hotcakes but the high-end blowers as well. In Q3 2012, 59% of high-end smartphones sold in China were powered by Android. In that same period, 3.5 million Android handsets were sold, as opposed to only 2.3 million iPhones.

So will Apple make a cheaper iPhone? Apple recently released the iPad mini, which is a cheaper version of the new iPad. It seems Tim Cook will decide to do the same with the iPhone.

The iPad mini was set to challenge the highly successful Google Nexus 7, a dirt cheap Android tablet. So it’s possible Apple is planning to create a cheaper iPhone to rival the bargain Google Nexus 4 or its successor in 2014.

Apple software head reveals in court the secret iPhone ‘Project Purple’

Testifying in an Apple vs. Samsung trial, Scott Forstall, Apple’s software head, revealed the top secret ‘Project Purple’. This was to become the original iPhone.

Steve Jobs requested Forstall to recruit top Apple employees. Jobs also told him not to tell the chosen few what they were working on.

Speaking in the courtroom, Forstall said, “We’re starting another project. It’s so secret I cannot tell you what the project is.”

He told the candidates, “You are going to have to give up nights and weekends probably for a couple years.”

He also revealed that many Apple employees doubted if they could shrink down an iPad and make it into the iPhone, which the Cupertino firm eventually did. He said, “I remember sitting with Steve and some others, and we all had cellphones and hated our cellphones.

“Could we use the technology we’d been using with touch and use that same technology to build a phone, something that could fit in your pocket, but give it all the same power we were looking at giving the tablet?”

Speaking about Project Purple, he said that Apple set an area in the Cupertino campus for lock down. This area was known as ‘the purple dorm’ where a select few were chosen to work on the iPhone.

He said, “We put up a sign that said ‘fight club’ – first rule of the Purple Project is you don’t talk about Purple Project outside those doors.”

Appblaster Gun For iPhone goes On Sale

That gun attachment for the iPhone, the Appblaster, has now been officially launched by its creator Apptoyz. All you have to do to enjoy first-person shooting games is to attach the gun-like accessory to your iPhone and blast away.

Apptoyz also said that they would be launching more Appblaster-like accessories for iOS devices within the near future. They also announced that they have as much as 20 apps in development.

Does the Appblaster only work for the iPhone 4? The answer is no. it works on the iPhone 3G S and the iPod Touch. However, it works better on the iPhone 4, due to the more powerful processor and gyroscope on Apple’s current flagship.

How does this accessory work? All you have to do is snap your iPhone into the plastic bracket, slap it onto the top of the gun, and the smartphone acts like your optics. The camera shows you your surroundings, and any alien you see, you blast away.

This is definitely better than normally shooting your way through with just your iPhone. Having an actual trigger adds more to the fun factor.

The Appblaster is now on sale for £19.99. Better get it now and start blasting those little green aliens away.
