Gartner Forecast Predicts iOS will Dominate Tablet Market till 2015

Gartner, a leader in technology forecasts, reported that the iOS will dominate the tablet market till 2015. Although their market share on the said market will diminish in the next 4 years, next generation iPads will still be a dominating force.

According to Gartner’s forecast, by 2011, Apple will have a market share of 68.7 percent. This figure will take a nosedive by 2015. In the next 4 years, Apple will have a market share of 47 percent. In the next 3 years, they will still be in the top 3 market share holders.

It is no surprise who Apple contender will be. Of course, this is none other than the Android platform. Android’s market share is predicted to reach 20 percent this 2011. By 2015, their market share will reach 39 percent. The sudden rise in popularity will be the result of Android 3.0 OS (Honeycomb) powered tablets, which will draw in larger crowds to the said platform. This platform will power up and coming Android tablets such as the 3D tablet the LG Optimus Pad.

On third place will be Blackberry’s tablet the Playbook with its QNX Blackberry OS 6.1. By 2015, RIM will hold a market share of 20 percent. This is thanks to RIM’s loyal followers the business and career-oriented folk, who will continue to use the platform. This is has always been the target market of RIM’s devices.

Gartner’s Research VP Carolina Milanesi gave suggestions on how to gain the competitive edge over Apple. She stated that other tablet manufacturers should not just focus on hardware such as dual-core processors, various sized touch screen displays, or more powerful cameras. The focus should be placed on apps, services, features, and the user experience in general. Only then will other platforms give the iOS platform for tablets a run for its money.
