Samsung claims Apple did not invent the tablet – 2001: Space Odyssey did

According to Samsung, Apple did not invent the tablet. It was the film 2001: A Space Odyssey who was responsible for the first tablet.

The Korean tech giant’s defense in the US court says, “In a clip from that film lasting about one minute, two astronauts are eating and, at the same time, using personal tablet computers.” Coupled with the statement, Samsung has provided pictures showing the astronauts viewing their tablet PCs.

“As with the design claimed by [Apple's] D’889 Patent, the tablet disclosed in the clip has an overall rectangular shape with a dominant display screen, narrow borders, a predominately flat front surface, a flat back surface (which is evident because the tablets are lying flat on the table’s surface), and a thin form factor.”

What’s Samsung’s point? It’s saying that tablet PCs have been conceptualized way back in 1968, when the film was shown in cinemas. Although the technology was not available in 1968, it demonstrates Apple couldn’t have conjured up the idea of tablets when they patented the iPad. The idea has already been in existence.

If you think about it, Samsung does have a point. If the design has been around since 1968, Apple cannot claim that the iPad was the first tablet computer.

Do you think Apple invented the first tablet, or do you think Samsung has point? Let us know what you think.
