Recently, New York City’s mayor blamed the iPhone and iPad for an increased crime rate. It looks like he was right. Armed robbers raided an Apple Store in Paris on New Year’s Eve. An estimated £1 million worth of Apple products were taken. Most of them were iPhones and iPads.
The thieves obviously knew what they were doing. They chose to rob the place a few hours after the Apple Store closed on New Year’s Eve. This was the perfect time to loot the store, since police were kept busy keeping the peace. The thieves were armed, but fortunately no one was badly injured. According to the Daily Mail, one security guard was “lightly injured”.
Speaking to Le Parisien, a French newspaper, a spokesperson said, “As the majority of police were busy watching the Champs Elysées, the robbers took advantage of this opportunity.”
French police are examining the CCTV footage to try and identify the culprits. Witnesses are also being questioned.
This isn’t the first time something like this happened. In London’s Covent Garden Apple Store, an employee took off with 250 units of the iPhone 5. It seems Apple products are such hot items that thieves are willing to do everything it takes to take off with these devices.
