Are you on the hunt for a more affordable handset running Windows Phone 8? Three is offering the HTC 8S on pay as you go for £180 plus a top-up. Expansys has also set the SIM-free version of handset for pre-order at £240. This means it is around £150 cheaper compared to its rival, Nokia’s Lumia 820.
Comparing the two, the Lumia 820 sports a bigger display at 4.3 inches compared to the 4-inch screen on the 8S. Despite the difference in screen size, the two displays sport the same resolution of 480×800 pixels. Although the 8S sports a smaller display, it will offer more pixel density at 233ppi compared to the 217ppi of the Lumia 820.
Although the 8S offers more pixel density, the Lumia 820 offers more power. It sports a more powerful 1.5GHz dual-core processor coupled with 1GB of RAM under the hood. The 8S, on the other hand, sports a 1GHz dual-core processor coupled with only 512MB of RAM.
Will you notice the difference? In theory, the only time you’ll notice the difference is when you try to run games on the devices. Games test the devices’ processor and GPU. If the device’s requirements are up to par with the game’s requirements, then you’ll be sure to run the game smoothly. Sadly, there are only a few games in the Windows Phone Marketplace that pushes a device’s specs to the limit.
Comparing other specs, both Windows Phone 8 handsets support as much as 64GB from a microSD card. The Lumia 820 sports an 8-megapixel camera, compared to just a 5-megapixel camera on the 8S. So when image capturing and video recording is concerned, the Lumia 820 is still the better choice.
