Samsung Galaxy S3 rumoured to sport an AMOLED retina display

There have been a number of rumours surrounding the hotly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S3, the successor of the highly popular Galaxy S2. These rumours revolve around the smartphones processor and casing. Now, current rumours have everything to do with the phone’s display. According to a report, the S3 will sport an AMOLED retina display similar to the display on the iPhone 4S.

The new comes to us courtesy of Digitimes. The website claims Korean panel manufacturers are heavily investing in the development of AMOLED panels. The word on the street is larger displays with higher resolutions will be the standard on a number of smartphones this 2011. This includes the Galaxy S3.

If we add this rumour to the list of rumours we’ve hear, the Galaxy S3 will sport a quad-core processor, a ceramic casing, and a 4.6 inch AMOLED display with a pixel density of 319 ppi, which is just 7 ppi short of the iPhone 4S’ 326 ppi on its 3.5 inch retina display. Although 7 ppi less compared to the new iPhone, you’ll never notice the difference since the naked eye can’t see pixels this small.

If the rumour is true, then this would mean that the Galaxy S3 will give the iPhone a run for its money. Well, not unless the iPhone 5 comes up with something significantly better.

Retina display meaning nobody can use your phone if you leave it on the cafe/bar table is a good idea. There are better ideas. Such as installing a casio type solar panel across the back of the phone and on the face (as per casio watches). But other ideas I don`t give away…so they die with me…sadly; as manufacturers will not use independent designers to supply concepts for a percentage.

Retina display; I thought could include the ability to only let the phone function with the your retina as per fingerprint unlock; instead of password or facial recognition. Can a phone open with a photo of you put in front of it? Whereas retina images are harder to get clear in general photographs to mis-use in such a way.
