According to a recent study released by ComScore, the iPad is currently the dominating force across tablet markets around the globe. Revealed on their report is the iPad’s 89% take on tablet traffic across global markets.
Various analysts have reported that the Apple iPad would indefinitely dominate the tablet market. ComScore’s study has further strengthened these predictions. It seems there is no stopping the iOS tablet’s ever-growing popularity.
True, Android smartphones are quickly gaining the upper hand on the iPhones when it comes for the race for smartphone OS dominance. However, when it comes to the tablet race, Android tablets are yet to come up with a solution to overthrow Apple.
On ComScore’s study, non computer traffic was compared across 14 countries. These non computer devices were composed of mobile phones, tablets, and other unspecified devices. In the majority of countries, which includes the UK, the iPhone dominated, claiming the majority of market shares in that particular category. It was only in the US wherein Android handsets dominated with a 35.6% take on non computer traffic.
In the 14 countries studied, the iPad maintained a massive lead over its competitors. It claimed 21.3% in the UK’s non computer traffic, while Android-powered tablets only managed to grab 0.3% of this market share.
Included in ComScore’s analysis was the way Android and iPad consumers make use of their tablets, either via Wi-Fi or network operator. In this study, iPad users generate 91.9% of traffic via Wi-Fi, compared to Android tablet users generating 65.2% of traffic via Wi-Fi. This makes us wonder if Apple users are more inclined to make use Wi-Fi rather than mobile networks to avoid data costs.
With these figures, Android tablets have a lot of catching up to do. We’ll see if they have an answer, once future Android tablets featuring upgraded versions of Honeycomb or the latest Ice Cream Sandwich roll out into stores.
